Abstract

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming the manner in which legal information is identified, analysed and utilised. Legal research, traditionally dependent upon the manual examination of statutes, judicial decisions, commentaries, journals and other legal materials, is now being supplemented by AI-powered search, document analysis, summarisation and legal reasoning tools. These technologies have the potential to reduce the time required for locating relevant authorities and to assist researchers in handling increasingly large volumes of legal information. At the same time, their use creates concerns relating to accuracy, fabricated authorities, algorithmic bias, confidentiality, privacy, copyright, transparency and excessive technological dependence. This article examines the changing nature of legal research in the context of artificial intelligence, with particular attention to the Indian legal environment. It explores the ways in which AI can assist different stages of legal research and examines whether greater technological efficiency necessarily produces more reliable legal research. The article adopts a doctrinal and analytical approach and also considers developments in selected foreign jurisdictions. It argues that AI should be understood as an assistive technology rather than a replacement for the independent judgment of the legal researcher. Human verification, critical evaluation and professional responsibility remain essential even where sophisticated AI systems are used. The article concludes by suggesting principles for responsible and reliable use of AI in legal research.
