Abstract

Legal research is an important part of the legal profession because good legal arguments depend on accurate and reliable information. Traditionally, legal research was mainly carried out through printed books, law reports, journals, commentaries, legal encyclopaedias and physical libraries. Although these methods are still useful, the rapid development of technology has significantly changed the way legal research is conducted. Today, a researcher can access statutes, judicial decisions, government notifications, research articles and international legal materials within a few minutes through online databases and digital libraries. Search engines, electronic databases, online case-law repositories and artificial intelligence-based tools have made legal research faster and more convenient. Technology has also made it possible to search large amounts of legal information using keywords, concepts and advanced search techniques. However, the use of technology does not mean that every piece of information available online is reliable. Researchers may face problems relating to inaccurate information, outdated judgments, incorrect citations, plagiarism, data privacy, copyright and excessive dependence on artificial intelligence. The increasing use of generative AI has created an additional challenge because AI systems may produce convincing but incorrect legal information, commonly referred to as AI hallucination. This research paper examines how technology has changed traditional legal research methods and analyses the major benefits and challenges associated with technology-based legal research. It also focuses on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in legal research and the need for human verification, research ethics and responsible use of technology. The paper argues that technology should be treated as an assisting tool rather than a replacement for the reasoning and judgment of a legal researcher.
