Abstract

The digital economy has altered the way individuals communicate, businesses operate, financial services are delivered and public administration is carried out. Online banking, electronic payments, e-commerce, cloud computing, social media and artificial intelligence have created opportunities for innovation and economic inclusion. At the same time, the growing dependence on connected systems has increased exposure to cybercrime. Activities such as phishing, identity theft, unauthorised access, malware distribution, ransomware, online payment fraud, cyberstalking and data theft can cause financial loss, compromise privacy and disrupt essential services. The consequences extend beyond individual victims: businesses may suffer operational interruption and reputational damage, while public institutions and critical infrastructure may face risks to continuity and security. This article examines the meaning and development of cybercrime, its principal forms, the factors contributing to its growth and its economic and social effects. It then considers the Indian legal framework, particularly the Information Technology Act, 2000, relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The article also considers the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence. It argues that effective prevention requires more than criminal penalties: it depends on secure technology, responsible data practices, effective investigation, institutional cooperation and public awareness.
