Artificial intelligence and machine learning are common phrase now a days and very few people are unaware of them; however any new idea launches, people are pretty reluctant to accept it. Lawyers and legal professions are no exception.

What is Artificial Intelligence-
Artificial Intelligence is a method of making a computer, a computer- controlled robot, or a software think intelligently like the human mind. AI is accomplished by studying the patterns of the human brain and by analyzing the cognitive process. The outcome of these studies develops intelligent software system.

The A.I powered “world’s first Robot Lawyer”
Technology is rapidly changing its form. After the advent of Artificial Intelligence, technology is moving towards a new revolution. Robots are slowly taking the place of humans. But will robots be able to do any work like humans as much as humans are... there are still many questions on this.

The Artificial Intelligence powered as the worlds first Robot Lawyer which was created by Joshua Browder in 2015 he launched his legal service chatbot DoNotPay . The program offers users a variety of legal assistance feature, such as the ability to challenge parking tickets, dispute cable bills, cancel memberships and subscriptions, appeal overdraft fees, and even sue in small claims court. The “robot lawyer” works by “asking what the legal problem is”, finding a loophole; and inserting that loophole into legal letter.

First time in History-
Faridian v. DoNotPay Inc, Superior Court of the State of California for the County of San Francisco, No. CGC-23-604987.
A case related to this technology has come to the fore, in which the world's first robot lawyer has now become a criminal himself. That is, the robot which was designed as a lawyer and all kinds of legal maneuvers were inserted inside it.
He himself will now have to appear in the court like a criminal. Let understand the whole matter.

What is the whole matter-
In fact, a case has been registered in a US court on the world's first robot lawyer. Chicago law firm Adelson has sued the robot lawyer in the Superior Court of State of California, arguing that the robot is practicing law without any degree or license, which is completely illegal

Which company has made this robot-
This robot has been made by an American startup company DoNotPay.
Do Not Pay came into limelight for the first time when, with the help of Artificial Intelligence, it had created a robot that could fight someone's case just like a lawyer. Its trial was also done in January. But now J Adelson law firm has filed a lawsuit against this startup company and its robot lawyer has been offered to appear in the court.

What did this robot do -
The company's CEO, Joshua Browder, wrote in a tweet on the issue that there is bad news for us, Adelson, a wealthy law firm in America, has filed a lawsuit against DoNotPay, in which he has done the work of a robot lawyer with artificial intelligence. Appealed to abolish. The company says that till now the robot gives legal advice, debates and arguments only on cases related to over speeding. But now trouble has arisen for this lawyer robot and it is presenting itself like a criminal in the court.

What is DoNotPay-
As a “robot lawyer”, DoNotPay is a downloadable mobile application that makes use of artificial intelligence to provide legal service. It comes with a subscription cost of $ 36 for a period of three months. It began in 2015 as a basic Chatbot , meant to help users navigate bureaucratic and legal hassles , mostly using conversation templates.

Legal Status of AI based robot lawyer  in India-
There are currently no laws against this, so you will have to go under product liability laws.
On the aspect of privacy violation when third party application is involved in legal proceedings, there is a necessity of robust data protection laws which regulate how the information is used and purpose for which they are retained or processed.
India does not have any specific laws for data protection but personal information is safeguarded under section 43-A and section 72-A of the Information Technology Act. It gives a right to compensation for improper disclosure of personal information similar to GDPR. In 2017 Supreme Court declared right to privacy as a fundamental right protected under the Indian Constitution.

Conclusion -
As the society has accepted and even embraced a certain degree of automation in our lives. From voice assistants like Siri and Alexa to mobile banking applications that permit mobile check deposits, we embrace this technology because it makes life easier and more efficient. Yet, before fully embracing AI- based legal services, the ethical implications need to be critically evaluated. Pondering on the practicality of an AI-powered app to assist in courtroom proceedings in India as affordability of utilizing AI-based technology like DoNotPay for smaller law firms and legal practitioners in India has a larger picture of efficiency and cost effectiveness when investing in AI- powered tool.
