Abstract

Digital technology has made copying instant, perfect and borderless, and has strained concepts designed for printed books and physical media. This article examines how Indian copyright law, read with the TRIPS Agreement and the WIPO Internet Treaties, treats computer programs, databases and multimedia works; how it handles digital reproduction, communication to the public and online infringement; and how technological measures, rights management information and intermediary safe harbours are used to manage rights online. It argues that the Indian statute has adapted more fully than is often assumed, but that temporary copies, multimedia classification and platform liability remain only partly settled.
