Every day, transgender and gender non-conforming people bear the brunt of social and economic marginalization-
Because of their gender identity. Advocates working with transgender and gender non-conforming people know this for decades as they have worked with clients to find housing, obtain health and partnership benefits, or save jobs terminated because of bias. Too often, policy makers, service providers, the media and society at large have dismissed or discounted the needs of transgender and gender non-conforming people in their communities, and a lack of hard data on the extent of anti-transgender discrimination has hindered Has fought for basic fairness.

Transgenders in this country face many issues including mental abuse , physical abuse, verbal abuse, not being given equal rights as other genders.

There is still a taboo in our society when it comes to transgenders. Unfortunately, we live in a society where gender plays a major role in judging people. Though the name of 'third gender' is given to transgenders, they do not get to live with peace and harmony.

Challenges Faced by Transgender in Society

1)      Discrimination in Dealing with psychological stress:-
The transgender people have to face a lot of discrimination and harassment and a lot of misbehaviour from the society. Because of this the transgender community have to face a lot of psychological health related problems and sometimes it leads to the suicidal thoughts or something that is negative to the health and sometimes they have to too much heavy pressure or anxiety attacks.

2)      Discrimination of Transgender in the Education sector:-

Most of the people of this community are either illiterate or less educated, due to which they are not able to join much in the educated class of the society. According to a census conducted in 2022, the population of transgender people was 5.9 lakh and in which only 57% people were literate, which is very low compared to the general population which has a literacy rate of 79%. As per the Right to Education Act, they are classified as a 'disadvantaged group', which means they have 27% reservation as an economically weaker section. The reasons for their being less educated can be listed as poverty, ostracism from their family and friends, mental health issues. Since they are not given opportunities for education, the result is that they do not find employment and even those who pursue their education with struggle are not given equal respect and value in the workplace.

3)         Discrimination by Medical Providers:-

The Deny of health care and multiple barriers to care are common in the lives of trans-gender and gender non-
conforming people. Subjects in our study seeking health care were attended by doctors' offices and hospitals (26%), emergency rooms (16%), mental health clinics (12%), EMTs (8%), and drug treatment programs (3). was denied equal treatment.                         Female-to-male respondents reported higher rates of unequal treatment than male-to- female respondents. Latino/a respondents reported the highest rate of unequal treatment of any racial category (39% by doctor or hospital and 22% in both emergency rooms and mental health clinics).

4)                  Discrimination of Transgender community in lack of Legal Protection:-

The transgender community is not as legally protected as other community and because of this the transgender people are victimised very easily even if they have not committed the crime. They have to undergo a lot of hate comments and lot of harassment and violence. There are a lot of police departments (34%) are insensitive about transgender community that they do not even file a complaint.

Initiatives by government for the transgender community

The government has launched a portal for the transgender people that is “SMILE - Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise” It covers many measures related to the welfare of transgender who are in to the education, Medical facilities, counselling, Development and many more facilities.

These problems include social exclusion, marginalization, lack of education and workplace opportunities, verbal abuse, sexual assault, mental issues, extreme poverty, violence, victims of hate crimes.
